Individuals with a serious medical condition may be entitled to have the NHS meet the costs of providing their care, including care home fees.
Recent advances in healthcare have substantially increased life expectancy. Although most of us lead long, happy and independent retirements, it is sometimes the case that the elderly are not aware of their entitlements or may feel unable to voice their concerns.
You or an elderly relative may not be aware of your possible entitlement to ‘NHS Continuing Healthcare’. If someone has a serious medical condition then the NHS has an obligation to pay for their care whether that be in hospital, at home or in a care home.
Eligibility is assessed by initial and full Primary Care Trust (PCT) assessments. Problems may arise where :
- A preliminary assessment is not carried out at all
- The assessment is poorly conducted
- There is a failure to reassess after health worsens
Sadly, in some cases, the elderly are asked to pay tens of thousands of pounds to fund care that should have been properly funded by the NHS.
Our Elderly Care Team can assist by discussing your eligibility for NHS Continuing Healthcare, advising on your entitlement to claim back fees and support and assist you in applying for a re-assessment.
