The rural community comes together at the Ryedale Show

For many people across North Yorkshire, the Ryedale Show is much more than a day out. It marks a point in the rural calendar when people can step away from the demands of everyday life, catch up with familiar faces and celebrate the community that sits at the heart of the countryside.

That’s exactly why we look forward to it every year. We see farmers, landowners, accountants, land agents, bankers and other professionals we work alongside throughout the year and enjoy a chat over a coffee and a slice of cake, rather than across a meeting table or at the end of a telephone.

It’s also a chance for people from different parts of our business to spend time together outside of the office. The team at the show this year included specialists in private client, family law, commercial property, corporate and dispute resolution. That reflects the reality of rural businesses. A conversation might begin with a land transaction but soon turn to succession planning, employment, diversification or a family matter. Farming businesses are rarely straightforward and every family and business has its own story.

For our lawyers, that variety is one of the things that makes agricultural work so interesting. No two conversations are the same, and being part of a wider team means there is always the opportunity to work alongside colleagues with different areas of expertise.

The strength of the agricultural community is what has kept the Ryedale Show going for more than 170 years. Compared with the show's long history, our 118 years in business makes us relative newcomers, but it has always felt like a natural place for us to be. Like the show itself, our work is built around long-standing relationships and the importance of knowing the people, businesses and communities we work with.

Above all, though, it’s simply an enjoyable day. There are conversations that don’t fit into half-hour diary slots, chance meetings with people you haven’t seen for months and the opportunity to pause, catch up and enjoy the atmosphere of one of Yorkshire’s best-loved agricultural shows.

We'd like to thank everyone who stopped by for a chat during the day. It was a pleasure to catch up with so many familiar faces, and we're already looking forward to returning next year.
