As International Women’s Day approaches, we’re reflecting on this year’s theme of ‘Give to Gain’, and the importance of generosity and collaboration.
Equality is often shaped through everyday actions rather than big statements, and we’re focused on the practical ways we can support women to thrive. Genuinely flexible working arrangements, sharing knowledge and support, and providing opportunities for training, development and progression create a supportive environment where we all succeed.
Here are a some reflections from senior members of the Harrowells team on their experiences as women in law.
Katie Daniel, Head of Agricultural Property:
“I joined Harrowells 12 years ago as a Paralegal and have since progressed to Partner and Head of Department. I’m a firm believer in encouraging women to develop in their roles and promote themselves. Hard graft matters but seeing other women tread the same path before and succeed makes the ambition feel achievable.”
Louise Dodds, Partner and Solicitor, Litigation and Dispute Resolution:
“As a mother of two young boys and the wife of a firefighter with very inflexible shifts, flexible working is not just a benefit – it’s essential. I simply could not do my job without that support. In return, that flexibility enables me to give my full focus, energy and commitment to my clients and team. Even in my short time at Harrowells, I’ve already experienced a genuine commitment to flexibility and helping their employees achieve a healthy work-life balance.”
Amy Foweather, Head of Family:
“This year’s IWD theme of ‘give to gain’ acts as a good reminder that small, practical support can make a big difference. This really resonates with me as a working mum. When workplaces give flexibility and understanding, they gain happier, more committed teams. Every legal mind, regardless of gender, should have the opportunity to thrive based on their merit and hard work and no one should feel they need to choose between a family or career".
Debbie Johnson, Head of Residential Property:
“I have had great mentors who have given their time to share their support and experience to help me progress with my career. I am now in a position to give back that support to junior female members of my team to hopefully help them progress in their careers. Supporting women’s growth is something we can do through everyday conversations, advice and support.
At Harrowells, there is no limit as to what woman can accomplish and we have strong female bonds across our department which in turn means we all feel supported and happy in our work”.
